Pulled elbow or nursemaid's elbow
Introduction
also known as a radial head subluxation or a nursemaid's elbow, is a common injury in young children. It occurs when the elbow joint is pulled or twisted suddenly, causing the radius bone in the forearm to partially dislocate from its normal position.
Causes ;
This injury typically occurs when an adult grabs a child's hand or wrist and pulls or twists it forcefully, or when a child falls onto an outstretched hand. The ligaments that hold the radius bone in place at the elbow joint are not fully developed in young children, making them more susceptible to this type of injury.
Symptoms ;
Symptoms of a pulled elbow may include pain, limited movement of the affected arm, and holding the affected arm close to the body.
Treatmen;
it typically involves gently maneuvering the radius bone back into its normal position at the elbow joint, which can often be done quickly and easily by a healthcare professional. After the bone is back in place, the child may be advised to rest in back slab the affected arm for a short period of time to allow any inflammation or swelling to subside .
Prevention :
Never pull or jerk child from hand or any act that pull elbow joint .
